Why should you participate in the Sahana workout?

  • Because you know PHP and can code in PHP!
  • Because you get a chance to let your code make a difference to a large cause. Globally!
  • Because you understand availability of information at the right time is important!
  • Because you *want* to do some life changing work! One that can change lives.

Imagine, a missing person has been displaced and lost touch with his family after floods. The relatives fires up an SMS to the system to search him in the database. And finds the person!!! So you can say, that was MY CODE which helped the family unite back after a disaster.***

  • Sahana is a PHP/mySQL based web application that can run over a standalone PC or a client/server & networked environment. So you need to have the knowledge of PHP to contribute to the code of Sahana.
  • Disaster strikes without notice. Sahana has been deployed at various such incidents and used by the government for relief operations. Right from pre-disaster management planning in the New York City USA, to post-disaster management operations in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, China, Philippines, India, Myanmar. So you know where your code goes! Globally and goes for a social/noble cause.
  • In such an emergency situation you need information, which is important, right when it is available. Or at least easily accessible when you want it. Getting information using your cellphone and SMS could be really easy and effective.
  • Sahana system has helped track families and unite missing victims. Certainly these are life changing experiences including saving lives. Getting the right supply of relief materials on the right time are among the few aspects the Sahana system is used in.

The example I have used is based on the scenario where Sahana is deployed with the SMS being setup which interacts with the Sahana server. People send SMS to the Sahana number and it retrieves information from the database. Missing persons information is collected at relief camps and entered into the Sahana central system. So, a person could be misplaced and land up at a relief camp in a distant area and get assistance. But his family could be searching for him/her someplace else.

Sahana’s Response to Bihar Floods

The Sahana team is currently working on setting up custom deployments as per the requirements specific for the Bihar floods. Currently, we are working on Translating Sahana to Hindi, that could be used in the deployment.  As you might have heard there are about 1-2 million people who have been affected by the Bihar disaster. A team in Kolkata (Calcutta) has just been initiated for the deployment effort.
If you wish to join us and contribute to this response effort please select the appropriate communication channel:

Communication Channels to be followed in case you are willing to contribute:

  1. Join the Localization Group for Sahana @ Google Groups for any communications and updates!
All translation related discussions go on the localization mailing list. [An important update on collaboration has been posted there for people working on the Hindi translation. So please join & check. Update: This thread]
  2. For people using Sahana and working on it, for issues relating to generic Sahana installation etc and usage can join and post to this mailing list. We have a wider range of support available here.
  3. In case you wish to work on the Bihar relief work going on you should co-ordinate with the Group Dedicated here: Sahana Bihar Google Group
Please note your credentials will be verified by the group to ensure that information here is not misused. In case your a new person and wish to help with translation ONLY join the first group, in case you want to contribute with the Sahana development, join the developers mailing list instead mentioned below in the links section. Update: Its seems lot of people trying to work on the translation and are joining this list instead. :-) Please do not join this list. That is for the team and people who are working with the Government agencies @ Bihar scenario, NGOs, Sahana developers etc. I understand you wish to help, and hence request to join the appropriate channels of communication! :-)

mukt.in v2 report :-) - An experience “delightful”!

This year, I made it to the event, after I came to know about it while hanging around on IRC in the Official Google Summer of Code channel. Interacting with the people in there, I got a chance to get involved and volunteer for tasks related to the event.

Considering most of the time I was occupied with work for GSoC, I managed to confirm my talk and attend the event for the whole of 3 days.

Event: mukt.in v2 2008

Venue: CSE Department, Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Date: 1-3 August 2008. Continue reading ‘mukt.in v2 report :-) - An experience “delightful”!’

Sahana at mukt.in 2008

Being introduced to Sahana was something that happened to me over an year back while working for my academic project, where I checked out Sahana and got to know about it.

With Google Summer of Code 2008 I got a chance to *actually* work and contribute ..

And while talking and working with guys at mukt.in, an idea popped up suddenly when krish said, “Hey AJuOnLiNE, why don’t you give a talk on Sahana“. I thought it was a great idea, but the event being in a different city and the dates of the event being quite some time ahead,  I wasn’t really sure if I would be able to make it.

But then I had the Google Bangalore office meet up and I managed to extend my stay for mukt.in :-) and not to mention the “You should go for it!!” I got from the Sahana main-dev list :-) and my Sahana mentor, Fran!

So here I was giving a talk on Sahana to the students of Computer Science Department at Osmania University, Hyderabad and speakers from the FOSS Community, IT Professionals, people highly experienced than me and in short it was fun pHun!

mukt.in is a FOSS promotion event which attracts audiences who are Newbies, Students, Professional, FOSS Advocates [not lawyers ;-)] , and speakers from other FOSS Projects/communities… This year the venue was Computer Science Department, Osmania University, Hyderabad. It was a 3 Day event, 1-3 August, 2008.

My main agenda at the event was to showcase:

  • what Sahana is
  • how kOoL it is
  • how it *has* been used in post-disaster situations
  • how can people/community contribute to it..
